Reflection on Easter

Easter with Autism.

It seems simple and can be if you plan with realistic limits in mind. Church is out for this family. It seems overwhelming to him to have all the Easter Sunday crowd in attendance.
So, what do I do? I feel guilty for not attending on the biggest day celebrated in my religious belief. I have to get over it, I bring myself to talking about the story of Jesus with my children even if they don't fully understand. We plan a meal with care... this is after all a day to celebrate. But, do we have family or friends over?

No.
Through the years we have found ourselves alone. Our family is just us.
Maybe in future we will have connections and celebrations with others.

Autism is a word.

I don't let that word limit my expectations.
I don't allow that to define who my son will become.
It is more than a diagnosis, it is a word.

Words can be left behind.

I listen to my heart.
I educate myself.
I consult with professionals but don't let them scare me.
It is more than that, it is a starting point.

Starting points are made as beginnings.

However, there is no end.

No Cure. No Easy Way.

I get by with faith, hope and determination.
After all, autism is just a word.
